Blackbird Presents RecordsBack in November 2014, soul/gospel legend Mavis Staples celebrated her 75th birthday with a star-studded tribute concert in her hometown of Chicago. If you missed the show, which featured performances by Staples, Gregg Allman, Michael McDonald, Aaron Neville and many others, you can watch it as an AXS TV special that airs April 16 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
The concert, dubbed Mavis Staples: I’ll Take You There — An All-Star Concert Celebration, also will be released as a CD/DVD package on June 2. The show included performances of gospel and soul tunes Mavis originally sang with her family group The Staple Singers, material from her solo career, and songs she’s performed with other artists over the years.
Other artists who took part in the event include Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joan Osborne, Keb’ Mo’, and Wilco‘s Jeff Tweedy.
Pitchfork has premiered a video clip from the show featuring Staples singing The Band‘s “The Weight,” along with all of the guests on the concerts lineup, including Allman, McDonald and Raitt.
