Credit: Henry DiltzAs David Crosby prepares to release his second solo album in less than a year, the folk-rock legend is on the road giving fans a preview of the record, titled Sky Trails, as well as playing songs from all parts of his long career. Accompanying Crosby on the trek is an almost completely different group than the one featured on his tour in support of last year’s Lighthouse album.
“The Lighthouse Band is an acoustic band. This band is definitely electric,” David tells ABC Radio. “And it’s pretty damned exciting.” The current group includes three musicians who were part of Crosby’s late-’90s band CPR — his son, keyboardist James Raymond; guitarist Jeff Pevar; and drummer Stevie DiStanislao — along with Estonian bassist Mai Agan, and singer/keyboardist Michelle Willis, who’s also in The Lighthouse Band.
The sets on David’s 2017 tour have included various solo tunes, as well as songs by Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Byrds. He also has been playing a lot of CPR material because, as he notes, “CPR is in this band, and we love those songs.”
Sky Trails will be officially released this summer, although Crosby has been selling advanced copies at stops on his current trek.
Crosby has never been considered a prolific artist, but Sky Trails will be the third solo album he’s released in the last few years, a burst of creativity that’s coincided with a rift between him and Graham Nash that put CSN on indefinite hold.
“You expect when you get older, the way I am, to slow down. And instead I sped up,” Crosby says with a laugh. “And I have no sensible explanation for that…I think it has to do with me being very happy right now.”
