Wednesday’s state tournament results

A pair of local high school baseball teams were in action on the opening day of the Class 1A State Tournament.
Viola advanced to the second round in dominating fashion. The Longhorns shut out Hermitage 10-0 at Taylor Field in Pine Bluff.
Mammoth Spring watched its season come to an end as they were edged out by Mount Vernon-Enola 8-7 at Woodlawn High School in Rison. The Bears’ final record is 20-8.

Three area softball teams began play in the Class 1A State Tournament at Pine Bluff Regional Park.
Viola was one and done in the tournament. The Lady Longhorns fell to Mount Vernon-Enola by a final of 5-2.
Izard County was down to its final out when they scored two runs to squeak by Hampton 5-4. Natalie Everett led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, reached second on a groundout and tied the game on a two-out triple by Shelby Morris. The Lady Cougars took the game one pitch later as Morris scored on a passed ball.
Rural Special was eliminated from the tournament. The Lady Rebels lost to Acorn by a final of 14-4.
