In an effort to removed unwanted, unused, and potentially dangerous controlled substances and over-the-counter medications from households, local law enforcement agencies across the U.S., including Baxter County Sheriff’s Department and the Mountain Home Police Department, are participating in the National Drug Take-Back Program on Saturday morning at 10:00 until 2:00 in the afternoon.The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office will accept unwanted drugs at the old Arvest Bank parking lot, across from Heartland Pharmacy, at 200 East 7th Street. The Mountain Home Police Department will have its secure drop box available in the lobby of the Mountain Home Police Department.
The drop-off is completely anonymous and no questions will be asked. For increased privacy, medications may be returned in any container. All unwanted prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, vitamins or other nutritional supplements will be accepted.
The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office also has a secure dropbox at 208 West 8th Street in Mountain Home accessible at all times. This lock box is under 24-hour video surveillance for security purposes. Sheriff John Montgomery said all pharmaceuticals collected will be destroyed later in the department’s drug incinerator.
Regular hours for the MHPD dropbox are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In Marion County unwanted prescription can be dropped of at the box, underneath the camera, at 491 U.S. 62 in Yellville.
In the past, flushing medications and drugs was the accepted method of disposal. Authorities now realize the drugs do not completely disintegrate and are contaminating waterways. Wastewater treatment plants and septic systems are not generally designed to treat pharmaceutical waste. The pollution ends up in creeks, rivers, and lakes, and it places the drinking water supply at risk.
