The Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society invites the public to observe and celebrate the 146th anniversary of the county’s formation. Baxter County Day is scheduled for Sunday from noon until 4 and features a “Passport to History Progressive Tour.”

This will be the Historical Society’s second event to celebrate the formation of Baxter County on March 24, 1873. David Benedict of the historical society visited with Kim Szecsi on KTLO-FM’s Talk of the Town and said the public is invited to observe the day and learn more about the county’s history.

The Passport to History Progressive Tour will be available at four locations during the event. The Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society has museum exhibits at the Heritage Center at 808 South Baker Street, the Rapp’s Barren Pioneer Settlement in Cooper Park, the Casey House at the southeast corner of the Baxter County Fairgrounds and the Buford School Museum at 4439 Buford Road. Participants will be given a passport to be stamped when they visit an exhibit, and Benedict says if they go to all four locations, they’ll receive a free vintage photo in which they posed in a 1970s Excalibur motorcar owned by Rich DeSanto.

In addition, a lunch of beans, ham and cornbread will be offered at the Heritage Center. Other snacks will be available along the tour route, and pie will be served at the Buford School Museum. Benedict says the historical society has been working to modify the Buford venue into more of a museum space.
