Steve Granitz/WireImageCyndi Lauper never actually graduated from college, but the school she attended for several years is now welcoming back with open arms.
The singer will deliver the commencement address at Northern Vermont University-Johnson on May 18. Cyndi took classes at the school in 1973 and 1974, when it was known as Johnson State College. She’ll receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree at the ceremony.
In addition to her many musical accomplishments, the Grammy-, Emmy- and Tony-award winner also is being recognized for her social activism. Via her True Colors Fund, Cyndi works to end homelessness among LGBTQ youth, and has also advocated for women, the entire LGBTQ community and those living with HIV/AIDS.
In a statement, the president of the college says, “Ms. Lauper is a creative genius who demonstrates the highest level of excellence…she is a leading voice in issues of social justice and has used her art and entertaining ability to broaden understanding of marginalized populations.”
The president adds, “Her inspiring spirit will enrich our graduates as they embark to make a meaningful difference in their own communities.”
In addition to not graduating from college, Cyndi didn’t actually graduate from high school, either: She was expelled, but later earned her GED.
