JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) Missouri budgeters have moved to end a requirement that colleges and universities charge students with unlawful immigration status the same tuition rate as international students.
Senate and House negotiators on Tuesday stripped the requirement out of a draft budget for next fiscal year.
Under the current budget, colleges and universities face losing funding if they charge those students anything less than the rate charged to international students.
The compromise needs approval from the full House and Senate. Lawmakers face a Friday deadline to pass a budget.
The proposed budget still includes a ban on scholarships for students without lawful immigration status.
Other deals hammered out Tuesday include a slight increase in funding for higher education institutions and a deal on how to pay for repairs to bridges across the state.
