The Calico Rock Museum and Visitor Center has been selected as the recipient of two prestigious awards from the Arkansas Museum Association. The presentations were made at the association’s annual spring conference in Pine Bluff.

The Calico Rock Museum was awarded the outstanding achievement in education award for its weekly Adventures in Science program. The program is held Tuesdays at the Tomlinson Art & Science Center.

Elementary-aged students attend the one-hour session. The educational sessions change every week and focus on the areas of art and science. All are hands-on and are conducted by museum staff and volunteers. The program generally has 50-60 students each week. The program is free to the students and includes a snack before the session begins.

The Calico Rock Museum was also awarded the outstanding achievement in media award for the Explore magazine. The magazine is published four times per year and promotes Calico Rock and the surrounding tourist region.

The magazine editions include articles on the area’s history, human-interest stories and promotion of the area for tourists. The publication is distributed free in local businesses and through state-operated visitor centers.

Over the past five years, the Calico Rock Museum has been recognized with more awards than any other museum in Arkansas by the state association. Museum Executive Director Gloria Sanders says, “This would not be possible without a tremendous, hard-working staff, a team of dedicated volunteers, generous donors, a supportive board of trustees, a great partner in the city of Calico Rock, and our museum patrons.”
