A rural Mountain Home man landed in hot water by making the mistake of attempting to bring methamphetamine into the Baxter County jail when he checked in to serve a weekend sentence.

Fifty-year-old Thomas Wheeler entered a guilty plea to the charges against him and was given five years probation during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday.

Wheeler got in trouble when he presented himself at the jail on Jan. 11. During the booking process, a jailer found a glass vial in Wheeler’s pants pocket. The substance in the vial, reported to be less than a gram, tested positive for methamphetamine. He was charged with possessing methamphetamine and with bringing contraband into the jail.

Wheeler should have been familiar with the rules. According to the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, he has been booked into the county jail approximately 17 times since 2002.
