Credit: Mike InnsEmerson, Lake & Palmer and Asia drummer Carl Palmer is hosting his own instructional camp this fall for progressive rock musicians, and he excited about sharing his “54 years’ worth” of experience.
The three-day event, Carl Palmer’s Prog-Rock Camp, takes place November 8-10 at Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena. It features workshops and classes from various musicians, as well as performances, Q&As, jam sessions and other activities designed to thrill prog-rock fans.
Palmer tells ABC Radio that while he’s done drum clinics in the past, he’s “never condensed it all into one sort of package.”
He notes that the camp “is really just dealing with what happened to me, the music that I’ve made successful, and the adventure that I’ve had from the age of 15, when I turned professional, right up to today, which is, basically, 54 years’ worth. So I’ve got a lot to offer, and I just want to spread it out.”
The 69-year-old rocker will be giving a master class, while other musicians who will be conducting workshops include ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist and current Asia frontman Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian, and the two members of Carl’s current band Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy.
Other camp highlights include a screening of a previously unseen 1997 ELP concert film recorded in Chile, and a full-length ELP Legacy show, which will also be open to fans who aren’t attending the camp.
Palmer says, “I want people to take something home and motivate them, move them forward, make them think about their life…and possibly even convert some people into thinking of music as a career.”
