A Marion County man, 37-year-old Cameron Ply of Pyatt, who told law enforcement he was held captive by individuals who took his clothes and planted stolen money on him, has been sentenced to five years of probation.

Ply pled guilty in Marion County Circuit Court earlier this month to a felony count of theft of property and misdemeanor counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and theft of property. Under the term of his negotiated plea, he was sentenced to 120 days in the county jail on the misdemeanor charges and given credit for time served.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Marion County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Old School Street in Pyatt March 14 regarding the theft of a vehicle. The resident said he heard a vehicle start about 4 that morning. When he got up about 6, he noticed his farm truck was missing.

He noted several items, including just under $300, a rifle, and a number of tools, were in the vehicle.

That afternoon, law enforcement advised the vehicle owner his truck has been found south of Lead Hill.

Inside the stolen vehicle, officers located a debit card issued to Ply, along with a Social Security card and two credit cards issued to a relative of Ply’s.

While the vehicle owner was gathering paperwork from the glove box of the truck taken from his residence, he noticed registration and insurance papers from a second truck he had driven to Boone County to meet officers. A check of the second vehicle’s glove box indicated it had been rifled and approximately $2,500 taken.

The .22 rifle reported taken in the stolen truck was found approximately 20 feet from the vehicle in a shallow ditch.

A short time later, Boone County authorities advised Ply had been taken into custody at or near a Lead Hill business where he had allegedly walked in completely naked, holding pillows to cover his private areas.

Authorities advised Ply was in possession of about $2,400 and had purchased some clothing with a portion of the funds.

During an interview, Ply first denied taking the stolen vehicle, then said he couldn’t remember if he did. At this point, he said he had been held captive by individuals who took his clothes, planted the money on him and placed the debit/credit cards in the stolen vehicle.

He then allegedly admitted having a drug problem and having used methamphetamine a couple of days earlier.
