JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) – Editor of The Joplin Globe Carol Stark has died after a long battle with cancer.
The Globe reports Stark died Wednesday at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St.
Louis. She was 61.
Stark was past president of the Missouri Press Association and will be inducted into the organization’s Newspaper Hall of Fame in September.
After starting her career at The Carthage Press, Stark joined the Globe in 1983 and held numerous positions until being named the paper’s first female executive editor in 2007. In 2018, she was named regional editor by CNHI, the Globe’s parent company.
Stark led the Globe’s coverage of the 2011 Joplin tornado that killed 161
people. The coverage won honors including the Distinguished Writing Award for Deadline News Reporting from the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
