A hunter in Marion County has died after being attacked by a deer. KYTV reports 66-year-old Thomas Alexander had shot a deer near Yellville with a muzzleloader. Keith Stephens, chief of communications for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, says Alexander apparently went to check on the deer after shooting it, and it wasn’t dead and attacked him. Stephens says Alexander had several puncture wounds on his body.

The hunter, who was by himself, called his family who alerted emergency responders. Alexander would later die at the hospital. Stephens says it’s unclear if Alexander died from the puncture wounds or from another cause. He says officials may never know, as no autopsy is being planned.

The Game and Fish spokesman warns hunters to stay away from downed deer for at least 30 minutes. He says if the deer hasn’t moved in that amount of time, then it should be safe to approach.
