Christopher Whitman of Mountain Home, who is accused of confronting a person and firing a pistol at him, appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday and entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of aggravated assault.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Mountain Home Police responded to a call reporting a disturbance with shots fired just after 12:30 a.m. Nov. 5.

The victim, who is not named in the probable cause affidavit, told police he had been confronted by the 30-year-old Whitman, and he had subsequently been shot at by the suspect. The victim said at no time during the incident did he “go for a weapon,” but “was running to avoid getting shot.”

Whitman admitted he had fired a .22-caliber pistol into the ground. He said he had then given the pistol to a friend, but refused to tell police the person’s name.

A no contact order was issued by District Court Judge Jason Duffy on Nov. 5 ordering Whitman to have no contact with a Wade Herron listed on the order as the alleged victim.

Whitman was ordered to reappear in circuit court Dec. 5. He is an inmate in the Baxter County Detention Center, with bond set at $2,500 cash. He wanted his bond lowered, but Circuit Judge John Putman said he believed, given the serious nature of the allegation, the bond was appropriate.
