The Missouri State Highway Patrol is encouraging the public to make smart choices for the new year. During last year’s 102-hour holiday counting period, 11 people died and 447 others were injured in 1,301 traffic crashes. With those statistics, a person was killed or injured every 13.4 minutes during the time frame.

The 2020 New Year’s 30-hour holiday counting period begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday and runs through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday. The highway patrol encourages those driving to a New Year’s party to be a designated driver. Those drinking for the celebration should make certain their group has a designated driver before they get to the party.

Those traveling to a New Year celebration should be buckled up. When in doubt, yield the right-of-way. The highway patrol says the posted speed limit reflects the roadway’s classification and is not a suggestion.

The highway patrol says someone causing a traffic crash could begin the new year by being arrested, facing legal fees, medical bills and possible jail time. An offender’s license could also be revoked. Ride-share services and taxis should also be utilized. If someone gets killed or injured, the driver causing the crash could pay the price for the remainder of his or her life.

Before traveling, road conditions in Missouri can be checked by calling toll-free 1-888-275-6636. In the case of inclement weather, allow extra time or consider staying home. In addition, Missouri law states if windshield wipers are being used, headlights must be turned on.
