Paramount Pictures2019 was a great year for Elton John, but Sunday night, the pop-rock legend will see if he can carry his winning streak into 2020 as he and his biopic Rocketman compete for trophies at the Golden Globe Awards.
Elton and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin are nominated for Best Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” the end-credit song from Rocketman.
On the Rocketman soundtrack, “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” is a duet by Elton and the film’s star, Taron Egerton. The latter has been nominated in the Best Actor — Musical or Comedy categrory, while the movie itself is up for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.
Elton and Bernie also will serve as presenters at this year’s ceremony. John and Taupin, separately, have each previously won Golden Globes for Best Original Song: Elton in 1995 for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” from The Lion King; and Bernie in 2006 for “A Love That Will Never Grow Old,” from Brokeback Mountain.
If Elton goes home empty-handed Sunday night, he may still have a chance to win an Oscar for the song at the Academy Awards on February 9, since “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” has made the shortlist for Best Original Song at that ceremony.
Meanwhile, another Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Randy Newman, has been nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Original Score category, for his work on Marriage Story. Interestingly, Randy will be competing against his cousin, composer Thomas Newman, who received a nod for 1917.
The Golden Globes air Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
