The second-chance diploma program at Mountain Home Public Schools is beginning its second semester with a registration day on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Guy Berry College & Career Academy.
The program – called Night Flight – allows young people, ages 18 to 21, who have previously dropped out of school, an opportunity to earn their high school diplomas.
Jeff Kincade, director of the Night Flight program, says he saw several success stories during the program’s first semester this fall.
“We had some students who really benefited from being allowed to attend these evening classes and recover some credits,” says Kincade. “Students found that this program was not easy, but they also found that it was worth it, and I expect that we’ll have some who graduate this semester.”
Kincade adds the program is not for everyone, but if a young person is willing, it is a valuable option.
“Students do have to apply themselves in this program and be present at least once a week to check in with teachers and take tests,” says Kincade. “But if they will do the simple things this program requires, it can totally change the trajectory of their lives. In most cases, a high school diploma is more valuable than a GED, and after students have a diploma in hand, a world of possibilities open up to them.”

“We try to work with anyone who is interested to make the program work for them,” says Kincade. “This is personalized learning that can really make a difference in a young person’s future.”
