The community is invited to what is described as a “one-of-a-kind” experience Tuesday afternoon at Baxter Regional Medical Center.

From noon until 2, attendees will have to opportunity to see what it is like to be a surgeon by participate in a hands-on demonstration of the da Vinci surgical system. The da Vinci is a tool for performing robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery.

The demonstrations will be conducted in the Baxter Regional Main Lobby next to Brewed Awakenings.

The da Vinci surgical system gives surgeons an advanced set of instruments to use in performing surgery. BRMC officials says the term “robotic” often misleads people. Robots don’t perform surgery. A trained, experienced surgeon performs surgery with da Vinci by using instruments he or she guides via a console.

The da Vinci system translates the surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion. The da Vinci vision system also delivers highly-magnified, 3D high-definition views of the surgical area.
