New da Vinci surgical robot added at Baxter Regional

Baxter Regional Medical Center (BRMC) unveiled its new da Vinci surgical robot to the public in an event Tuesday afternoon aimed at showing the community what it’s like to be a surgeon.Added to BRMC’s arsenal last week, the da Vinci XI joins the hospital’s SI model, which was put into service in 2011. The da Vinci Surgical System gives surgeons an advanced set of instruments to use in performing robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgery.

Ron Peterson, president and chief executive officer at Baxter Regional, describes the benefits the da Vinci is providing.

Robots don’t actually do the surgeries. The machines are simply an extension of the operating surgeon, who controls the device with a console. The new XI model will provide significant upgrades, Peterson says.

Baxter Regional has been getting its mileage out of the original da Vinci. There are facilities in Arkansas with multiple devices at work, but Peterson explains just how much the equipment has been utilized at the local hospital.

Peterson adds that the maker of the equipment, Intuitive, indicates BRMC has utilized it to capacity. The hospital expects to improve its surgery rate by 20% with the new equipment.

The usage of the machine has evolved since the equipment was introduced into service, Peterson says.
