The latest proposal to kick start a Major League Baseball season appears to have legs. An early July opening day could happen if owners and players agree how to share revenue, according to multiple reports.
What would that mean for Minor League Baseball, including the Arkansas Travelers?
“We just don’t know anything,” said Travs Assistant General Manager Rusty Meeks. “They haven’t said a single thing to us.”
So far, the Travs have lost out on 18 home games. That’s missed revenue on tickets, parking and concessions. Meeks said game day revenue would likely have to be included in any plan for a Minor League season.
“We would not play without fans,” he said. “I know they’ve talked about that at the Major League level. That would be very tough for us to do at the Minor League level and I think any Minor League team would say that just because we don’t have TV deals.”
Meeks said Major League teams have incentive for Minor League teams to play. They provide depth to the big league club.
He said a plan will likely have to be in place to restart MLB before the minors.
“If they ever say Minor League Baseball is ready to go, we’ll be ready.”
