All seven building principals and the Mountain Home Public School District’s top leadership participated in a virtual town hall event Thursday evening at Dunbar Auditorium.

The event was held to allow school leadership to continue addressing the public’s concerns with the start of the 2020-2021 school year just over two weeks away.

The top question each administrator addressed was social distancing.

At the Mountain Home Kindergarten, Nelson-Wilks-Herron and Hackler Intermediate School, similar plans will be in force. Kindergarten Principal Janet Wood gave a recap of the efforts.

Things will be a bit different at the Mountain Home Junior High and Mountain Home High School. Students at the high school will not use lockers this school year, according to Principal Brent Bogy, who offered this description of the social-distancing efforts.

Also discussed on several occasions was mask usage. The district will follow the recommended guidelines for all students from grades three through 12 to wear masks in the classroom, but will have plenty of mask breaks during the day and will allow students to remove the masks when socially distanced.

Superintendent Dr. Jake Long addressed the situation with those who are reluctant to wear a mask.

The district will also follow all the state’s guidelines for response to any COVID-19 cases reported, which Long says will happen in public schools this year.
