2-vehicle accident results in fatality, multiple injuries

A two-vehicle accident Monday night in Harrison resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries. Forty-year-old Maria Ruiz of Rogers was killed in the accident near the rest area on U.S. Highway 65, and those injured were transported to North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison and Cox Medical Center South in Springfield.

According to the Arkansas State Police, a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Johnathan Aviles of Rogers was stationary on the southbound shoulder of Highway 65. Four other Rogers residents, Ruiz, 22-year-old Theresa Lyn, 35-year-old Francisco Durin and a minor were Aviles’ passengers.

Another vehicle, driven by 43-year-old Michael Hendricks of Harrison, was traveling southbound on the highway. Aviles’ vehicle reportedly attempted a U-turn, causing Hendricks’ vehicle to strike it in the rear of the driver’s side.

The weather was clear, and the road was dry in the 8:40 p.m. accident.
