LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas has reported 945 new coronavirus cases while hospitalizations in the state hit another record high, Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Monday.
Arkansas had 786 people hospitalized Monday with the virus, up from Sunday’s record high of 741, Hutchinson said. The governor also announced 23 more deaths from COVID-19 for a total of 2,108 since the pandemic began.
“We continue to see a high level of hospitalizations across the state,” Hutchinson said. “This increase can affect everyone, even those who have not contracted COVID-19. We all have a responsibility to our friends, family, and neighbors to do our part as we fight this virus.”
Also Monday, Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman announced he had tested positive for the coronavirus but that he was currently asymptomatic.
Over the past two weeks, the rolling average number of daily new cases in Arkansas has increased by 251.4, an increase of 25%, according to researchers from Johns Hopkins. There were 522.6 new cases per 100,000 people in Arkansas over the past two weeks, which ranks 21st in the country for new cases per capita.
The actual number of cases in Arkansas is likely higher because many people have not been tested and people can carry the virus but not feel sick.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and a cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
