A Stone County woman, 32-year-old Kayla N. Callahan of Mountain View, is facing a felony charge of battery on a detention/correction officer following an alleged altercation as she was being jailed.According to the probable cause affidavit, Callahan was being “very disruptive and confrontational with jail staff” during her booking into the Stone County Detention Center Feb. 4.
When two officers attempted to conduct a body search for weapons or contraband before placing Callahan in a cell, she reportedly struck one in the head twice with her hand. In addition, the allegedly pushed the two officers several times and struck a second one numerous times.
She was eventually restrained and escorted to a cell.
The Stone County woman’s incarceration resulted from an incident that began about 1 p.m., when radio traffic indicated Mountain View police were attempting to locate a female, later identified as Callahan, who had reportedly been involved in a theft at Dollar Tree.
Law enforcement learned Callahan was an employee of the store and had reportedly taken a wallet from a basket inside the store containing $150. In addition, she had an outstanding warrant from theft of services out of the Mountain View Police Department.
Less than a half hour later, Callahan returned to the store with the wallet, but left before law enforcement could make contact with her.
Her vehicle was stopped a short while later. She and her passenger, 38-year-old Kevin Day of Mountain View, identified as a parole absconder, were taken into custody. Callahan told law enforcement she didn’t know her male passenger’s name but had been with him for a few days.
Their vehicle was searched, leading to the discovery of marijuana, drug residue and paraphernalia.
Callahan and Day have been charged with felony counts of possession of drug paraphernalia with the purpose to use crystal methamphetamine. In addition, Callahan’s bond was set at $10,000, with Day’s at $5,000.
