
There was plenty of high school basketball Thursday, as regional tournaments continued in Arkansas.
The opening round of the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament concluded at Izard County High School in Brockwell.
Norfork’s girls clinched a state tournament berth with an easy win. The Lady Panthers beat up on Maynard by a final of 71-46.
The Viola girls were victorious in the first game of the day. The Lady Longhorns were able to breeze past Hillcrest 57-35.
On the boys’ side, Izard County was able to eliminate Mammoth Spring 70-47. The Cougars were led by Coby Everett with 28 points, Gunner Gleghorn scored 17, and Caleb Faulkner added 14. Cole Young had 20 points for the Bears, and Aidan Burns chipped in 18. Izard County improves to 24-6 and clinched its eighth consecutive state tournament bid. Mammoth Spring wraps up the year at 21-11.
Flippin’s girls were able to secure a state bid after Thursday’s opening game of the Class 2A West Regional Tournament at Magazine. The Lady Bobcats defeated Mountainburg 66-58.
The Class 1A Region 1 Tournament wrapped up its opening round at Lead Hill.
The Ozark Mountain girls put the mercy rule in effect, as they routed County Line 64-30. Kaleena Ricketts and Brooklynn Baker were the Lady Bears’ top scorers with 12 points each, and Macy Young finished with 11.
Jasper also invoked the mercy rule in the other girls’ contest. The Lady Pirates pounded Mulberry by a score of 50-19.
Lead Hill’s boys clinched their first state tournament bid in 12 years after squeaking by Ozark Catholic 46-44. Cody Paul paced the Tigers with 16 points, and T.J. Catron and Pierce Marshall ended up with 12 points each.
The Salem girls will be in next week’s state tournament after their opening game in the Class 2A Central Regional Tournament at Melbourne. The Lady Greyhounds bounced South Side-Bee Branch 58-44.
Valley Springs ended up splitting with Cedarville to finish the first round of the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament at Bergman. The Lady Tigers advanced to the semifinals with a 48-38 victory over the Lady Pirates. The season ended for Valley Springs’ boys, as they were edged out by Cedarville 56-53.
The Harrison girls will also be among the area teams in state tournament action next week after winning their opener in the Class 4A North Regional Tournament at Ozark. The Lady Goblins beat up on the host Lady Hillbillies 47-23.
In Missouri, two area girls’ teams battled for the championship of the Class 4, District 11 Tournament. Forsyth’s season ended with a 55-47 loss to Ava. The Lady Bears’ state sectional game is Wednesday.
