The Mountain Home City Council on Thursday night agreed to sell a piece of property donated in 2020 to its fire department.
The land, which is located off Buzzard Roost Road east of Mountain Home, is a 40-acre tract which borders the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land surrounding Lake Norfork along with other privately owned property.
The City Council voted 7-0 with one member absent to sell the land to Scott Booth for $100,000.
Sealed bids from four prospective buyers were opened at 5 Thursday evening, Mayor Hillrey Adams said, with Booth’s bid being the highest. Booth owns lands adjoining the property, Adams said.
Adams describes the land to KTLO:
Listen:
The land is not currently accessible by any public roadway, except for a “farm road” off of Christensen Road, east of the city. The property has no easements and Adams has described the property as being “landlocked.”
The land first drew the attention of the City Council at its April 1 meeting, when Adams told council members that the city had received an unsolicited offer for the land. After conferring with City Attorney Roger Morgan, Adams and the Council decided to sell the land through a bidding process.
The money from the land’s sale will be used to help pay for the construction of the city’s new fire station, which will sit upon land donated by Mountain Home resident Sonny Sharp in honor of his late parents, William Elmer “Red” and Margaret Sharp. When completed, the station will be named “Sharp Family Fire Station #2” in recognition of the family.
Listen:
The new fire station will be built along Highway 62 next to Big Steve’s Gold and Pawn and across the highway from Car-Mart. Once built, that station will replace the city’s current Fire Station #2, which is located on Sunset Drive behind the Kozy Kitchen restaurant.
Council members Bob Van Haaren, Jennifer Baker, Wayne Almond, Paige Evans, Carry Manuel, Jim Bodenhamer and Nick Reed each voted in favor of selling the land to Booth. Coucil member Susan Stockton did not attend Thursday night’s meeting.
