Barter Peterson was arrested in West Plains after allegedly fleeing from police and pulling a knife on officers.

The West Plains Police Department responded Thursday evening after receiving a report of theft in progress at the Walmart Super Center located at 1310 Preacher Roe Blvd.

Officers attempted to apprehend the subject, later identified as Peterson, upon exiting the store. Peterson attempted to flee on foot and resist arrest as officers attempted to take him into custody. One officer used a Taser on Peterson, who fell to the ground. As officers tried to place Peterson in custody, he allegedly pulled a fixed blade knife from a sheath on his waist brand and brandished it in the threatening manner at the officers. Peterson also allegedly attempted to assault an officer with the knife before fleeing on foot again.

Peterson was later apprehended around the intersection of Preacher Roe Blvd. and Mitchell Road with the assistance of the Missouri State Highway patrol and the Howell County Sheriff’s Office.

Peterson was found to have a no-bond felony warrant from the Missouri Department of Corrections, Probation and Parole. He was transported to the Howell County Jail and awaits formally being charged with first-degree assault of a special victim, unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, resisting arrest and stealing.
