A woman from Summit is jailed on murder and attempted murder charges following a shooting incident at her house late Tuesday night. Thirty-four-year-old Bridget Lynn Brown is being held in the Marion County Jail on a quarter of a million dollar bond. The victim of the shooting is identified as 24-year-old Rachel Hemphill of Summit. Marion County Sheriff Clinton Evans says when deputies arrived, they found Hemphill on the floor of the residence with a gunshot to the head. She was transported to Baxter Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Evans says the incident happened at 251 Railroad Trail in Summit while a group of people were gathered at Brown’s house. During the investigation, Brown told law enforcement she was entering the house, but because the stairs were shaky, she attempted to brace herself with the hand she had a gun in and the trigger was pulled. Law enforcement have not said why Brown had the gun.

Evans says witnesses gave conflicting statements from what Brown told law enforcement. After investigators from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Arkansas State Police finished their interviews, they consulted with the prosecuting attorney to determine the charges in the case. In addition to murder in the first degree and attempted murder in the first degree, Brown is charged with committing a felony with a firearm.

The Marion County Sheriff says the investigation into the shooting is continuing. The victim’s body has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.
