Veterans organizations and civic groups will gather Monday — Flag Day — at noon at the Baxter County Veterans Service Office to dedicate a flag depository box. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

The box, which will be located at 5 East 9th Street in Mountain Home outside of the Veterans Service Office, will accept donations of all tattered, worn or otherwise unserviceable American flags that need to be retired.

Flags left in the box will be collected twice a month by members of the Mountain Home High School’s Navy Junior ROTC program, who will ceremonially fold the flags. The flags will then be turned over to one of the area’s funeral homes. When a veteran passes away and is cremated, one of the retired flags will be draped over the veterans body and disposed of in a dignified, ceremonial manner through the cremation process.

The flag depository box is being funded through donations by area business. The money collected helped purchase the depository box, with any leftover funds being used for maintenance and upkeep of the Veterans Memorial Wall on the courthouse square.
