A man charged with stabbing an acquaintance after a night of heavy drinking pled guilty to the charge against him during an appearance in Baxter County Circuit Court Monday.
Thirty-seven-year-old Carlos Ramirez was put on probation for six years. He has been an inmate in the Baxter County jail for almost two years. He was booked just before 1 a.m., Sept. 1 2019.
Initially, it was believed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would pick Ramirez up. A detainer was placed on him by the federal agency, tagging him as a potentially “removable foreign alien.”
Prosecutor David Ethredge said the federal agency continued to indicate an interest in Ramirez, but never arranged to take him into custody and it was decided to proceed with the state charges.
Ramirez lived in the Promise Land area when the stabbing occurred. He was charged with second-degree battery.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed in Ramirez’s case, a Baxter County deputy was dispatched to a residence along County Road 502 on August 30, 2019 to investigate a reported stabbing.
When the deputy arrived, he reported seeing a woman rendering aid to a male on the outside of the residence.
She was attempting to control what was described by the deputy as a significant amount of “arterial blood flow” from the victim’s arm.
The deputy was told Ramirez and his acquaintance had both been drinking for hours when Ramirez became violent and an altercation ensued.
The deputy and a sheriff’s office investigator, who also arrived on the scene, interviewed the female witness.
She said she had been asleep in the bedroom she shared with Ramirez when he came into the room, awakened her and said he had hurt the victim and was going to get into trouble.
According to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery, Ramirez told investigators he was defending himself when the stabbing happened. He was reported not to have elaborated on that statement.
At the time of the incident, officers were unable to find the knife Ramirez allegedly used in the attack, but did note he was wearing a long knife sheath on his belt.
The female witness described the weapon as being “a combat style knife with a silver handle.”
