An Izard County man was arrested last week after telling authorities he didn’t think his victim was “hurt too bad. I only hit her with the bat once.” Thirty-nine-year-old Kenneth Babcock of Melbourne is facing a felony count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of third-degree battery.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Izard County deputies were dispatched to Finley Road in Oxford on September 14 in reference to an assault. Prior to his arrival, an investigator made contact with a male subject, identified as Babcock, walking on West Springhill Road. As the investigator exited his vehicle, Babcock reportedly said, “It’s me. I’m the one you’re trying to take to jail.” When the investigator asked if anyone was hurt at the residence, Babcock allegedly admitted to hitting a victim with a baseball bat.

After Babcock was taken into custody, the investigator and another deputy arrived at the residence and interviewed the victim and other witnesses. Everyone at the scene claims Babcock was asked to leave the residence, and he got into a verbal argument with the victim. Babcock allegedly punched the victim in the side of the neck and struck her in the back of the head with a bat.

Babcock was transported to the Izard County Detention Facility and later released on a bond of $10,000. The victim was transported by ambulance to Izard County Medical Center in Calico Rock.
