A man whose last known address was in Indianapolis, Indiana, appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday and pled guilty to charges against him.

In two cases, 34-year-old Mark Jeffries Jr. was accused of taking a vehicle without permission and possessing contraband in the Baxter County jail.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with seven suspended and three to serve.

In the car theft case, a victim reported that she and her boyfriend had picked Jeffries up on Feb. 11 and drove to a Mountain Home motel.

According to the probable cause affidavit, at some point Jeffries drove off in the car.

The victim told police she received a text from Jeffries the next day “apologizing for taking her vehicle.”

On Feb. 16, the dealership that sold the victim the Ford Fusion located it at a motel in Newport by using GPS.

Newport police went to the motel and found the vehicle and Jeffries. When asked how he had gotten to Newport, Jeffries is alleged to have pointed to the stolen Ford.

He told police he had borrowed the car from the victim, but she said that was untrue.

In the second case, Jeffries was charged with having a Suboxone strip in the jail and attempting to get the drug to another inmate stuck to a candy bar.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Jeffries asked a jailer to take a piece of candy to the other inmate.

When the candy was examined, pieces of what were suspected to be a Suboxone strip were found, along with a note telling the other inmate “to be cautious” when eating the treat.
