An area woman is dead after her van was struck by a sliding trailer from an 18-wheeler in Van Buren County. Eighty-year-old Darla Furrer of Mountain View was pronounced dead at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
According to the Arkansas State Police, the 18-wheeler was negotiating a curve Friday afternoon on Arkansas Highway 9 north of Shirley. The trailer slid across the centerline when the driver applied his brakes, and a van driven by Furrer was traveling in the opposite direction. The front of the van reportedly struck the front axle of the trailer.
The unidentified driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured. The weather was cloudy, and the road was wet during the 1 p.m. accident.
