With the NBA going through a wave of players entering the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols many players have been called into action. Today the Boston Celtics have signed free agent guard, and former Razorback, Joe Johnson to a 10-day deal, a league source confirmed.

The Celtics have had seven players entered into the NBA’s health and safety protocols in the last ten days. Johnson joins 15-year veteran CJ Miles, who signed a 10-day contract on Monday, as the latest players brought in to help the Celtics fill out their roster for the near future.

Johnson, 40, has not played in the NBA since the 2017-18 season, when he appeared in 55 games for the Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz, averaging 6.8 points and 22 minutes.

Johnson, even though he has not been in the NBA, has remained active by participating with Team USA and also participating in the BIG3, the three-on-three league founded by Ice-Cube, and was named it’s most valuable player in 2019 and 2021.

The deal sends the 6 foot 7 inch forward to the team that originally drafted him with the 10th overall pick in 2001, but was traded at the trade deadline later that year for veterans Rodney Rogers and Tony Delk.

Johnson is expected to play against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night at TD Garden in Boston.
