Monday basketball results include Cotter girls winning Northark opener

The North Arkansas College Invitational Tournament held its opening round at the Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison. On the girls’ side, Cotter defeated Calico Rock 46-31, Ozark Mountain topped Alpena 59-42, Marshall beat Omaha 58-41, and Jasper routed Shirley 52-17. In the boys’ games, Norfork fell to Shirley 49-41, Valley Springs pounded Alpena 79-46, and Omaha picked up a 59-52 win over Kingston.

Yellville-Summit began hosting the Arkansas State University-Mountain Home/Arvest Bank Winter Jam with mixed results.

The Lady Panthers were able to come away with a win on the girls’ side. Yellville-Summit topped Lead Hill 46-35.

Yellville-Summit’s boys did not fare as well, as they fell to Lead Hill 60-41. Landon Keiter led the Panthers with 10 points. The Tigers had two players with double doubles, as Quintin Sewell scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Dustin Turner had 11 points and 11 boards. Also for Lead Hill, Jayce Williams and Cody Paul added 10 points each.

Bakersfield ended up splitting with Couch. The Lady Lions beat up on the Lady Indians 51-16. Bakersfield’s boys were edged out by Couch 64-62.

Four area boys’ teams played their openers in the Cabool Holiday Tournament. Viola got past Summersville 70-66, Gainesville destroyed Salem, Missouri, 75-42, Lutie lost to Norwood 80-50, and Dora fell to Thayer 75-46.

Two area schools began action in the Mountain Grove Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament. Gainesville was toppled by Mansfield 53-19, and Dora defeated Bradleyville 57-41.

Three area teams took part in the Division II quarterfinals of the NEA Invitational Basketball Tournament at Jonesboro. On the girls’ side, Salem lost to Greene County Tech 52-44, and Melbourne breezed past Brookland 68-29. Salem’s boys fell to Searcy 68-39.

Two area boys’ teams played their openers in the Lendel Thomas Classic at Harrison. Bergman lost to Springfield Hillcrest 77-67, and the host Goblins destroyed Earle 79-49.
