Human remains discovered following a structure fire in the Buford-Cartney area last month have been identified. A spokesperson from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the victim was 40-year-old Melissa Britt.

According to Sheriff John Montgomery, a report came in at 5:12 on the morning of Dec. 19 of a fire on Old School House Trail, and the residence was fully engulfed. When area fire departments responded to the scene, they were told a female may have been in the residence.

According to the incident report, Britt’s mother told a deputy the structure was her daughter’s residence, and she was inside sleeping. Investigators were called to the scene, and human remains were later discovered.
