A brush fire that got out of control in Baxter County has been contained. Norfork Fire Chief Frankie Baker says crews from Norfork and Salesville and the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Division were able to get the fire under control around 9 Friday evening.
Chief Baker says the fire started south of Arkansas Highway 5, just past the Salesville city limits, when an individual was burning brush and left it unattended. Crews were able to contain the fire just before it reached seven residences in the area.
Baker says local firemen were hampered by the terrain and a bluff Thursday evening and were not able to reach the blaze, leading him to contact the Forestry Division early Friday morning.
In response, three planes were utilized in the effort, one spotter and two that each hold 700 gallons of water. He said late Friday afternoon the water planes had made between 10 and 15 drops.
In addition, dozers were utilized to cut a fire break, as efforts continued to protect the houses in the area, as well as others on River Ridge Road. Chief Baker says there have been no signs of the fire rekindling.
