Another round of winter weather is expected to reach the Twin Lakes Area at the end of the work week. The National Weather Service is predicting about 1 to 3 inches of snowfall in Mountain Home on Friday, and Friday night, lows will get down to the mid teens with wind chill readings possibly in the single digits. With the potential freezing mix, local residents that do any type of gardening will want to take extra care of their plants this week.
Vicki Garner is the co-host of Gardening in the Ozarks on KTLO-FM, and she says the weather conditions will be particularly difficult on any newly-planted perennials, trees and shrubs.
Listen:
For plants starting or getting ready to bloom, it’s important to keep those covered, but local residents will need to be careful in doing so. Garner says if possible, avoid using plastic to cover budding plants.
Listen:
Those covers will need to be removed from the plants the next day, if the temperature is warm enough. If it’s below 32 degrees, the covers will need to stay over the plants.
Garner says the ideal covering for plants is fabric material.
Listen:
Every plant won’t necessarily be harmed by the colder temperatures and the wintry mix. Garner says she is not as concerned about yuccas, crepe myrtles or anything that is not blooming, although the foliage can also freeze.
Listen:
Garner can be heard on Gardening in the Ozarks Saturday mornings at 10 on KTLO-FM.
