Less than 24 hours after there were reports of a tornado in the north central and northeastern portions of Arkansas on Friday, the National Weather Service was unable to confirm a tornado touched down. A survey crew from the North Little Rock office says the damage was caused by straight line winds and large wind-blown hail.
The crew assessed the damage in portions of Fulton, Sharp and Lawrence counties and said the tornado reports could not be verified. Listeners of KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot had submitted pictures of what appeared to be a funnel cloud near the Baxter/Fulton county line.
Damage was caused to multiple structures in Fulton County. According to reports to the National Weather Service, the storm ripped the fronts of multiple residences and destroyed a number of vehicles in Cherokee Village. There were also hail stones fairly equal to the size of grapefruits and softballs in the area. Hail was reported in Viola, Salem and Cherokee Village.
A listener shared this photo of her car windshield damaged by hail on U.S. Highway 62/412 in Salem.
In addition, a report of vehicles being flipped over near Walnut Ridge was determined to have been caused by the vehicles crashing after encountering a significant amount of hail on the roadway.
