Twin Lakes Area residents can help support local literacy efforts and celebrate Mother’s Day weekend by making a donation for the purchase of a quiche basket during the Twin Lakes Literacy Council’s fundraiser Friday.
Proceeds from the Hugs and Quiches III, Spring into Literacy fundraiser will go to support adult and children’s programs for literacy.
Each basket will contain a fresh baked quiche containing ham, and spring vegetables (peas and asparagus), as well as a salad “that will keep” for two. The basket will also include a pairing of select teas, and discount coupons for wine available from Judicious Spirits in Mountain Home.
The deadline to place an order is Wednesday afternoon at 3. The cost is $75. Orders may be placed in person at the Twin Lakes Literacy Council office at 1318 Bradley Drive, Mountain Home, or online at GiveLively.com. Office hours are Monday-Thursday from 10-3. The telephone number is (870)425-7323.
Prepared baskets may be picked up Friday at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 511 Coley Drive in Mountain Home between 11-1 or 4:30-6.
The quiche baskets will be prepared by Heather Powell, an accomplished chef and the Executive Director of the TLLC. Those who purchase baskets will also be sent, via email, a link to the Zoom session in which Powell will demonstrate how to make the quiche and salad.
Twin Lakes Literacy Council, a non-profit organization, has been in existence for over 35 years, providing free one-on-one tutoring in reading, math, and English as a second language, as well as citizenship, pre-GED help, workplace skills, and computer and financial literacy. Its mission is to improve literacy locally. An estimated 18 percent of adults in the community cannot read at a fifth grade level.
The Literacy Council presently serves 50 adults and 27 children and the number of students are rising following a drop-off during the pandemic. A total of 71 volunteers contributed 1,698 hours during the last year. Persons interested in serving as tutors or administrative help may inquire by calling (870)425-7323. No experience is required.
