An announcement made Wednesday is said to have great impact on students and health care professionals in Mountain Home.

Baxter Regional Medical Center (BRMC) has pledged $600,000 to partner with Mountain Home High School, Arkansas State University Mountain Home (ASUMH) and the Baxter Regional Hospital Foundation to expand the LPN program to high school seniors this fall.

Dr. Julia Gist, Dean of the school of Health Sciences at ASUMH says the program will increase health care providers in the community by allowing students to complete courses in the LPN program during the second semester of their senior year.

Students will still be required to meet all application requirements for ASUMH before being accepted into the program.

Dr. Gist says the program will not be exclusive to high school students, ASUMH is currently accepting applications for a part-time LPN summer program, plus the other two programs in fall and spring.

There are roughly 23 RN and 20 LPN vacancies at BRMC. The extension of the LPN program will enable students to begin their careers in the medical field while still in high school, leading to more workers at the hospital and surrounding clinics.
