Norfork baseball, Cotter softball among teams clinching state tournament bids

Several area high school baseball and softball teams began regional tournament play on Friday.

Three local high school baseball teams watched their seasons come to an end in the Class 2A West Regional Tournament at Mansfield. Cotter fell to Mountainburg 11-3, Flippin lost to Mansfield 9-6, and Yellville-Summit was eliminated by Lavaca 12-0.

Three area baseball teams played their openers in the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at Marked Tree.
Norfork was able to punch its ticket to next week’s state tournament. The Panthers routed the host Indians 11-1.
Viola’s defense of the last two Class 1A state championships came to an end. The Longhorns fell to Hillcrest 6-4.
Izard County will join Norfork in Saturday’s regional semifinals. The Cougars were able to shut out Armorel 10-0.

Four area baseball teams were at the Equity Bank Sports Complex in Harrison for the start of the Class 1A Region 1 Tournament.
Ozark Mountain was bounced from the first game of the tournament. The Bears suffered a 17-4 loss to Scranton.
Lead Hill was able to breeze its way to a state tournament berth. The Tigers pounded Western Yell County 19-6.
Lead Hill’s next opponent in the regional semifinals will be County Line. Omaha ended up falling to the Indians 15-4.
Jasper was one and done in the tournament. The Pirates lost a high-scoring game to Ozark Catholic by a 15-11 decision.

Two area baseball teams were at South Side-Bee Branch to begin the Class 2A Central Regional Tournament.
Salem’s season came to an end in the first game of the day. The Greyhounds were bounced by Bigelow 9-7.
Melbourne was able to dominate on its way to clinching a state tournament bid. The Bearkatz beat up on Quitman 11-1.

Bergman came up just short of continuing its season in the Class 3A Region 1 Baseball Tournament at Greenland. The Panthers were edged out by Booneville 7-6.

Harrison’s baseball team will move on to the state tournament after this weekend is over. The Goblins began the Class 4A North Regional Tournament at Morrilton by blanking Dardanelle 10-0.

Three local softball teams joined their baseball counterparts in Mansfield for the start of the Class 2A West Regional Tournament.
Cotter was able to secure a spot in the state tournament. The Lady Warriors eliminated Johnson County Westside 10-6.
Flippin was also able to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. The Lady Bobcats shut out Magazine 3-0.
Flippin’s next opponent will be Lavaca. Yellville-Summit ended up losing to the Lady Arrors 14-0.

Three area softball teams were at the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at Marked Tree.
Calico Rock punched its ticket to the state tournament in the last game of the day. The Lady Pirates defeated Hillcrest 9-6.
Calico Rock will be paired with Armorel in the semifinals. Izard County was bounced by the Lady Tigers 4-0.
Mammoth Spring picked up where they left off from Thursday’s rainout. The Lady Bears topped Shirley 7-4.

The season ended for three area softball teams in the Class 1A Region 1 Tournament at the Equity Bank Sports Complex in Harrison. Ozark Mountain fell to Western Yell County 14-4, Lead Hill lost to Mulberry 18-1, and Omaha was eliminated by County Line 16-1.

Melbourne’s softball team secured a state tournament berth after its opener in the Class 2A Central Regional Tournament at South Side-Bee Branch. The Lady Bearkatz destroyed Bigelow 13-3.

Valley Springs was able to take its opener in the Class 3A Region 1 Softball Tournament at Greenland. Valley Springs was a 10-6 winner over another group of Lady Tigers from Charleston.

Harrison advanced to the semifinals of the Class 4A North Regional Softball Tournament at Morrilton. The Lady Goblins defeated Clarksville 7-1.
