Gavin Reed of Midway was arrested November 25, 2020 on a string of drug charges, only to be picked up and jailed again on criminal charges just 53 days later.

He was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center Jan. 16 of last year on his newest charge — being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The 33-year-old Reed appeared during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Monday, pled guilty to charges against him and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Reed was jailed on the weapons charge after a vehicle in which he was riding was stopped by an Arkansas State Police Trooper for a minor traffic infraction in mid-January last year.

During the stop, Reed was found to be carrying a loaded pistol in the waistband of his blue jeans. As a convicted felon, Reed is not allowed to be in contact with weapons.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Reed initially denied ownership of the gun, saying he had purchased it for his 14-year-old daughter. He later admitted the gun belonged to him.

Reed’s late November 2020 arrest came when police went to a residence along Mockingbird Lane looking for a parole absconder.

Reed was one of four people taken into custody at the home.

According to the probable cause affidavit, when those inside the residence saw officers approaching, Reed and a female attempted to climb out a back window but were intercepted before they could flee the scene.

One of the males in the house barricaded himself in a bedroom and had to be extracted by officers.

The officers reported finding drugs and drug paraphernalia, including smoking pipes, used syringes and digital scales in the house.

In one of the bedrooms, a hole was discovered between the wall and ceiling where a bag was concealed. The bag was reported to have held almost six grams of a mixture of methamphetamine and Fentynal. Marijuana was also located.

A Jeep reported stolen from Mountain Home November 8, 2020, was found parked next to a camper trailer on the Mockingbird Lane property. Personal items belonging to Reed were reported to have been discovered in the vehicle.

Two small children who were reported to have spent the night in the residence prior to the raid where released into the custody of relatives

The house had no running water and an outside generator provided the only electricity. The residence was described as filthy, with rotten food and clutter throughout.

In the probable cause affidavit, investigators described the living conditions in detail:

“There were rat droppings on the counters, and inside the cabinets and floor of every room of the residence. In one of the bedrooms, there was a whole smoked turkey sitting on a nightstand that appeared to have been left there until it spoiled. There were multiple holes in the floor where the ground could be seen. One could not walk without stepping on or in clothing, food, urine puddles or other items scattered throughout the residence.”
