Bakersfield moves softball to spring, hires Bowen to start volleyball

More area schools in southern Missouri are announcing significant changes to their athletic programs. The Bakersfield R-IV School District is joining Gainesville and others in adding high school volleyball to its fall schedule and shifting softball to the spring. Recently, the Bakersfield School Board announced the hiring of Molly Bowen as its inaugural head volleyball coach.

Bakersfield athletic director Doug Lansdown says the Lady Lions’ softball program has been dealing with travel issues due to other schools already switching from the fall to the spring.

Bakersfield has its new volleyball system ordered. However, Lansdown says there was a hurdle they had to clear to get the Jerry Taylor Gymnasium ready for the sport.

In addition to high school volleyball, Bakersfield will be starting a middle school team. Lansdown says its season will be played in the spring.

For Bowen, the upcoming season will mark her first as a coach, and she says she is looking forward to getting started.

Bakersfield is set to start practicing volleyball as soon as possible. The Missouri State High School Activities Association normally allows schools to begin practicing for fall sports in August.
