Walmart’s new equity investment will provide more high-quality, affordable beef to shoppers

Walmart and Sustainable Beef LLC announced they have signed an agreement to acquire a minority stake in Sustainable Beef to source top-quality angus beef products from their new processing facility located in Nebraska.

This partnership helps supplement the current beef industry and provides additional opportunities for ranchers to increase their business. The new facility is expected to break ground in September and open by late 2024, creating 800 new jobs in North Platte, Nebraska. Walmart senior vice president of merchandising for deli services, meat and seafood, Tyler Lehr, says the partnership provides visibility into the beef supply chain and will complement Walmart’s regeneration commitment to improve grazing management.

Sustainable Beef will work with cattle feeders and ranchers to understand critical elements of the supply chain and implement a consistent approach to antibiotic us and reporting across herds in line with Walmart’s position on antibiotics in animals. They will help improve and refine the beef supply chain to provide quality beef for customers.

This is Walmart’s latest step in the retailers committeemen to increasing access to high-quality beef at an affordable price for its customers, while boosting capacity for the beef industry along with ensuring long-term economic viability for cattle ranches.

Sustainable Beef is a rancher-owned company. As a part of the investment, Walmart will have representation on Sustainable Beef’s board of directors.
