Wednesday, the Twin Lakes Community Foundation presented the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office with the first distribution of the Mark A. Bergan Memorial Endowment that is dedicated to assist in the funding of a K-9 unit with the department. Currently, Baxter County does not have a K-9 unit.

The endowment was established in 2004 by Lester and Cynthia Bergen in 2004 in memory of their son.

Each year, the sheriff’s office will receive the grant to help with purchase of additional or replacement canines, along with any supplies, equipment, or training needed to support the K-9 unit.

Currently, the department does not have a K-9 unit but these funds will help start build one. Lieutenant Sebastian Dennis says that purchasing from a K-9 breeder can run into thousands of dollars per dog and a lot of research will go into making the right decision to acquire a K-9 for Baxter County.

The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office is one of four benefactors for the endowment, and was presented with $8,685.75 in its first year, and is expected to grow as time passes.
