
The Norfork High School basketball teams were able to pick up a sweep over Viola Tuesday at the Bobby D. Hulse Gymnasium.
The boys’ game needed overtime. With 10 seconds left in the extra period, Layne Scalf hit a three-pointer in the corner to push the Panthers past the Longhorns 49-47.
The girls’ game was a battle between teams ranked in the Class 1A Top Five by the Arkansas Sports Media. Second-ranked Norfork was able to beat Viola, currently tied for fifth, by a final of 53-31. Keely Blanchard led the Lady Panthers with 14 points, and Liza Shaddy and Kasey Moody added 11 each. A.J. McCandlis scored 14 points for the Lady Longhorns.
Salem’s boys were one and done in the NEA Tournament at Jonesboro. The Greyhounds were eliminated from the Division II bracket with a 73-44 loss to Forrest City.
The Salem girls suffered their first loss the season. The Lady Greyhounds, currently ranked third in Class 3A by the Arkansas Sports Media, fell to Paragould 53-49. Salem was led by Marleigh Sellars and Chelsea Hamilton with 17 points each. The Lady Greyhounds drop to 11-1 on the season.
Izard County was able to take two wins after hosting South Side-Bee Branch for three games.
The Cougars won the senior boys’ game over the Hornets 62-51. Tyler Hill was Izard County’s top scorer with 20 points, and Jude Everett and Keaton Melton each chipped in 12.
Izard County’s senior girls did not fare as well as they were edged out by South Side 52-50. Quinn Johnson led the Lady Cougars with 16 points.
The evening began with the Izard County junior boys squeaking by South Side 50-47. The Junior Cougars were led by Sebastian Nussbickel with 23 points, and Garrett Dillard had 14.
There was a battle between boys’ teams ranked in the Class 2A Top Five at Imboden. No. 5 Marshall suffered a 68-62 loss to top-ranked Sloan-Hendrix.
