On Friday morning the Ozark Mountain Solid Waste District Board (OMSWD) met at the site of the NABORS Landfill in Three Brothers. Representatives of Lakeside Recycling Systems (LRS), looking to purchase the land, were onsite to answer questions from the board members and the public.

Representatives state once the sale has been approved and completed, they do plan on re-opening the cells currently permitted. They state they want to work alongside the district and find the best solution going forward.

LRS representatives state the plan from day one would be to upgrade the leaching collection system, clear out old leaching, upgrade the gas collection system, and will monitor the water surrounding the landfill to make sure there is no contamination.

Currently, LRS is investigating through dye tracing to find where the water is moving and if there is karst topography in the region. They state they do not want to own land if it is karst. The investigation will help them figure out the challenges and the speed at which the water moves.

The next meeting will be scheduled after OMSWD receives the reports from LRS.

OMSWD Chairman Fred Woehl spoke with KTLO’s Heather Link to discuss his thoughts about Friday’s meeting.

LRS states they expect the landfill to be in the negative for several years as millions of dollars will be spent on getting things going again and do not expect to recover from the investment for at least five years.

If approved, the closing of the sale could take place in March with a reopening in 6-9 months, pending weather and materials. Once reopened, the landfill would accept waste within a 125 mile radius and current permitted cells would be good for 10 years.

LRS currently operate a construction and debris landfill in Mayflower.
