As Twin Lakes Area residents do spring cleanup work, some will want to engage in outdoor burning. Those living in the city of Mountain Home will need to abide by a new ordinance recently passed by the city council stating burning in the city is prohibited when the humidity is 25% or less.

Mountain Home Fire Marshal Shawn Lofton says the new rule was modeled after a guideline currently used by the Arkansas Forestry Commission.

Currently, Mountain Home residents are prohibited from burning in a ditch, and the fire has to be at least 25 feet from a structure. In addition, someone over 16 years of age should be monitoring the blaze, and a garden hose needs to be available to put the fire out.

Lofton says when it comes to enforcing the new guidelines, the fire department is hoping to avoid having to penalize a citizen with a fine.
