Tax day is set for Tuesday.A law passed in December 2021 allows taxpayers three extra days to file their taxes, with the deadline moving from April 15 to April 18.

The IRS has encouraged taxpayers who need more time to file their returns to request an extension by filing Form 4868. This automatic extension will give taxpayers until October 17 to file their returns. However, it is important to note an extension to file is not an extension to pay any taxes owed. Taxpayers who are unable to pay their taxes in full by the Tuesday deadline should still file their returns and pay as much as they can to avoid penalties and interest charges.

For taxpayers who are due a refund, the IRS expects to issue most refunds within 21 days of receiving a tax return.
